Since this website page is about Orange County naming, it seems appropriate to talk about the naming of Orange County, California itself.

Naming Orange County wasn’t the brainchild of a slick branding or naming agency. Nor was it the dirty work of some hotshot freelance naming consultant. Of course not! But if you think the answer to how Orange County got its name is obvious, you’d be as off the mark as I was! The name actually came before the citrus groves! In 1889, the county was named to attract and encourage immigration. Based upon the tropical and fragrant draw of its new name the area grew, and along with the population growth came the growth of oranges. By the 1920s, oranges were a primary crop. This great example of Orange County branding helped lay the foundation for the area’s strength today. Simultaneously home to industry, tourism and prime real estate development, today’s Orange County features exquisite beaches, outstanding restaurant, hotel and retail destinations and a Mediterranean-like, sunny SoCal climate.
