Albuquerque naming

Since this website page is about Albuquerque naming, it seems appropriate to talk about the naming of Albuquerque, New Mexico itself.

Naming Albuquerque wasn’t a task given to one of the country’s top naming agencies. No, like most city names, there’s a history behind the Alburquerque name. The city, also called Duke City, was named after Francisco Fernandez de la Cueva. He was 8th duke of Albuquerque (note the spelling difference) and the city was named after that Spanish city. He served as Viceroy of New Spain from 1702-1711 and the provincial governor at the time, Francisco Cuervo y Valdes, made Albuquerque’s naming official. Albuquerque may not be an easy city name to spell, but it’s an easy city with which to fall in love. It’s famous for its early Native American influences, its Spanish culture, its balloon festival and its chili pepper-infused cuisine. Maybe that’s why, today, when over 900,000 people use the name Albuquerque, what they’re really calling it is home.
