Toronto, Canada: naming agency services for small businesses

Since this website page is about Toronto naming, it seems appropriate to talk about the naming of Toronto, Canada itself.

Naming Toronto, Canada, as catchy a name as it may be, wasn’t the work of some big branding agency or some freelance naming wunderkind. Of course not! Just as with understanding the derivation of most city names, when we want to learn more about Toronto naming, we take a quick glimpse into the city’s history. Now, etymology isn’t always a certain science, but there are Huron tribe references to the word Toronto dating back hundreds of years. The word had a meaning equating to “plenty.” Also, there was a river, a popular canoe route for explorers, that was named Riviere Taronto. With plenty of water about (the Ontario province contains about 250,000 lakes), serving as sustenance, food source and pathway to commerce, this sense of abundance, especially abundant water, would seem to make good naming sense. In the Toronto of today, you’ll find a cosmopolitan attitude, famed Canadian politeness and civility, clean streets, museums, theatre and live music and a vibrant mix of cultural influences.
