New York: naming agency services for small businesses

Since this website page is about New York naming, it seems appropriate to talk about the naming of New York, New York itself.

Naming New York wasn’t the work of some Madison Avenue branding agency or some freelance namer, an over-caffeinated wordsmith who got hooked on phonics. Of course not! As with most city names, New York naming has everything to do with its founding. Often referred to as “the city so nice they named it twice” (from a Gerard Kenny song), New York was once known as New Amsterdam. After capturing the city from the Dutch, who promptly surrendered without fighting, the name served a tribute to the then Duke of York, who later became England’s King James II. Today, New York stands as America’s most populous city (over 8.5 million) and one of the world’s most visited places. There isn’t much for which the city isn’t famous, so naming New York’s attributes and accomplishments would be both exhaustive and unnecessary. To wrap this up, let’s just quote from one of my all-time favorite songs, “Empire State of Mind,” the Alicia Keys/Jay-Z tribute: “There’s nothing you can’t do, now you’re in New York, these streets will make you feel brand-new, big lights will inspire you, let’s hear it for New York.”
