Seattle naming

Since this website page is about Seattle naming, it seems appropriate to talk about the naming of Seattle, Washington itself.

Naming Seattle, despite the city’s love of great tech, wasn’t a task given to the name generation robots. And aren’t we all glad for that? So, how then did Seattle get its name? As with most city names, the question of Seattle naming isn’t so much how. It’s who. Native Americans inhabited the area for 4000 years, prior to the arrival of the Europeans. In 1852, the city of Seattle was named in honor of Chief Si’ahl, who had earned the respect not only of his own family’s Duwamish and Suquamish tribes but other area tribes, as well. If you’re naming Seattle sell-points, the city’s mix of skyline and greenery, its museums, including that of the world-renowned glass artist Dale Chihuly, its youthful, progressive and innovative mindset, and its penchant for coffee would surely make the list.
