Since this website page is about Baltimore naming, it seems appropriate to talk about the naming of Baltimore, Maryland itself.

Naming Baltimore wasn’t the result of a bunch of thesaurus work. No, as with most city names, there’s a story behind Baltimore’s naming. The Calvert family, of Irish descent, was one of the original land grant owners. Cecil Calvert was the second Lord Baltimore in the Irish House of Lords, and the city was named after him. When naming Baltimore highlights, the Inner Harbor, the aquarium, Camden Yards and Fells Point’s rowhouses come to mind.
