Miami naming

Since this website page is about Miami naming, it seems appropriate to talk about the naming of Miami, Florida itself.

Naming Miami wasn’t a creative assignment handed over to some lucky Florida branding agency or professional brand names consultant. Of course not!  As is the case with most city names, to understand Miami naming we need only examine its rich history. The Mayaimi were a Native American tribe that lived in the area surrounding Lake Okeechobee. The name Miami roughly translates to “big water,” but today’s Miami offers far more than big water. There’s a big art scene, big real estate, a big Cuban influence, a big LGBTQ community, big nightlife, big golf, big food and big fun.
