Since this website page is about Los Angeles naming, it seems appropriate to talk about the naming of Los Angeles, California itself.
Los Angeles naming didn’t come from some scribbles on a napkin or some brainstorming on a dry erase board. No, as with most city names, the name Los Angeles has a story behind it. Los Angeles, California is commonly called L.A., and the naming of Los Angeles has a long history of shortening to go with it. (Things to do. People to see. No time for us busy people to bother with extra syllables.) What was once called by religious Spanish settlers El Pueblo de Nuestra Señora la Reina de los Angeles de Porciaoncula was later abridged to El Pueblo de la Reina de Los Angeles. Eventually, it simply became known as Los Angeles, which is Spanish for angels. Second in population only to New York city, 4,000,000 people call the metropolitan Los Angeles area home. (And somehow, they all manage to get on Interstate 405 at the same time.) But since the weather, cultural diversity and number of things to do can’t be beat, for both residents and visitors the name Los Angeles means fun.
